There are plenty of details to consider when buying a vacuum cleaner.

Being an interior designer, I have a fairly well-decorated home with loads of furniture and appliances which are prone to collecting dust and triggering allergies.

For someone like me, vacuum cleaners are truly a godsend, and so I’m writing this review today so that you can make an informed decision on the kind of cleaner you should buy.

When buying a vacuum cleaner, it is necessary to take into consideration the size of your house and the kind of flooring you have.

If it’s a fairly large house like mine, it’s reasonable to assume you have a bunch of different types of surfaces, and you need to run your vacuum cleaner over all of them.

Best Vacuum Cleaner For Multiple Surfaces Jul 2024

Dyson DC65 Multi Floor Upright Vacuum Cleaner

best multi surface vacuum for pet hairFirst up on our list is this DC65 Multi Floor Upright Vacuum Cleaner from the highly renowned Dyson. This brand has a knack for making high-quality vacuums with their patented, highly effective technologies.

This vacuum cleaner features a completely redesigned brush bar which gives you 25% more power, which in turn pushes the bristles deep into the surface and clean up more dirt. But the most important feature this one boasts is the Radial Root Cyclone Technology, which captures more microscopic dust than other vacuums out there.

Most vacuums require you to choose different settings when moving from one type of surface to another. Dyson DC65 by virtue of its technology has an active base plate which optimizes itself so that it can create the most contact possible with every type of surface. What this does is it minimizes air leaks and makes for more suction power at the head.

My Experience With The Product

The first thing I noticed about this product is that it has an insanely good pickup. It jacked up to its full power within seconds of starting up. They weren’t kidding when they said that it has a lot of power.

I was a little worried that this rather heavy vacuum would be difficult to move around, but fortunately, they’ve included something called Dyson Ball Technology which makes it easy to move from carpets to underneath to nooks and crannies of my house. It was no trouble at all.

The automatic shifting depending on different floor types makes it one of the easiest vacuums to operate and I would definitely recommend this as a no-nonsense, no-frills vacuum for every homeowner.

The best bit about this vacuum is that it has a telescopic wand that reaches up to 15.7 feet long. This means you don’t need to lug the vacuum up the stairs. You can simply keep it at the bottom and take the telescopic wand up the stairs. The wand also makes easy work of cobwebs and dirt near the ceiling.

My Experience With The Product

There is a knob at the bottom of the vacuum which lets you change the mode from hard floors to soft. You can just use your feet and there’s no need to bend down to turn the knob. With one switch of the knob, the vacuum cleaner seamlessly went from my floor to the carpet without any loss of suction.

The bin is also super easy to use. I just held it over my dustbin and with one click, it emptied everything inside. The HEPA filters ensured that all the microscopic allergens in my room could be easily sucked in without any effort whatsoever.

For all the heft it carries, the product is also surprisingly light at only 17.6 pounds. Thus, no matter how tired you are, it’s super easy to carry it around the room and make it look absolutely spic and span.

It has every feature that Dyson is famous for, like Dyson Ball Technology for easy maneuvering and Radial Root Cyclone technology which increases flow efficiency, air pressure and captures every speck of dirt in the house.

The hose and wand have a maximum reach of an astounding 45 feet. If you have a big family living in a large house, this is the ideal canister vacuum cleaner for you.

In keeping with its design for use in large houses, it also has a bin volume of 0.53 gallon. Unless you haven’t cleaned or lived in your house for months on end, there is no way that capacity is not going to suffice.

My Experience With The Product

Personally, I’m not a big fan of canister vacuums but this one is really as good as it hyped up to be. On top of that, it is also super easy to use.

The turbine tool and brush bar can be controlled through the handle itself. So again, you don’t need to bend down repeatedly if you have to clean different types of surfaces.

As far as cleaning different types of surfaces go, this cleaner also scores top marks. It has stiff nylon bristles that can remove dirt which has sort of sedimented into your carpets. If you’re cleaning hard floors, you would switch over to the soft carbon fiber filaments which are ideal for hardwood and tiles.

BISSELL CrossWave Floor and Carpet Cleaner with Wet-Dry Vacuum

BISSELL CrossWavebest multi surface robot vacuum makes it to this list because of a special reason. It lets you mop your floors while you are cleaning up dust from them. That basically halves the amount of time you need to clean your house.

The product comes packaged with 3-pack of 32 oz. bottles of Crosswave multi-surface formula. This cleaning formula is suitable for use on sealed hard floors, area rugs, laminate and pretty much every floor surface you have.

This model utilizes a dual-action brush roll which has a microfiber and nylon brush that lets you mop and pick up debris at the same time. It has a two-tank system that keeps the cleaning solution and dirty water separate to ensure you’re always cleaning with fresh water and cleaning formula.

My Experience With The Product

I was skeptical at first because I couldn’t believe that such a product was possible and if it was, they would make a mess of things. But I was pleasantly proven wrong.

Why should you get a multi-surface vacuum cleaner?

Depending on the surface, vacuum-cleaning works in different ways. Carpet cleaning is radically different from cleaning hard floors and it requires a different type of brush-roll action. Then again, you would also want to clean upholstery, mattresses, and drapes.

If your cat or dog is leaving fur all over the house, then that’s another job for the vacuum cleaner. If you spill some wine on the couch or there is a blocked pipe in the washing machine, some vacuum cleaners will be able to take on that task as well.

Thus, most of the time it’s best to just get yourself a multi-surface vacuum cleaner which can take care of all these problems by itself. Here’s a buyer’s guide to learn about the most important features you should look for in a vacuum cleaner.

Buyer’s Guide To The Best Multi Floor Vacuum Cleaner

HEPA Filters

While sucking up all the dust and dirt, there is a chance that small, harmful dust particles get blown about. This is when it’s time to consider getting a HEPA filter.

They will go a long way in removing all manners of dander, dust and other allergens from your house. A good HEPA filter can remove up to 99.99% dust particles, which can be as small as 0.3 microns. HEPA filters are made of glass fiber which is arranged in a mesh pattern. This helps in blocking and trapping all the small particles.

You’ll need to remove and clean the filters every 6 months or so, depending on your usage.

Bag or Bagless

Bagless vacuum cleaners are promoted as more powerful because there is no loss of suction when you move them across the floor. Another advantage is that you don’t need to replace the bags after you finish cleaning. You can simply clean it after use.

However, there is a chance that while emptying the bag, it might send dust back into your room. This is where bagged vacuum cleaners are better as they send the dust straight into your dustbin.

The Power

It’s not all about amperage when it comes to vacuum cleaners. Don’t just buy the strongest vacuum cleaner on the market, as the suction will just stick it to the floor as you try to move it across.

Instead, you should really consider the Airwatt rating and the efficiency, as those are the true indicators of a vacuum cleaner’s performance.

Wet or Dry

Like we mentioned before, there are vacuum cleaners that are meant for dry surfaces as well as both dry and wet surfaces. They usually have two modes present in them and you can switch between dry and wet.

If you’ve got little pets in the house which haven’t been potty trained yet, or if you are really into DIY projects, you’re bound to leave a lot of sawdust, brickdust, and plaster. All of this can get into and clog the filters of a normal vacuum cleaner, but a wet vacuum cleaner will be totally equipped to deal with this.

Upright or Canister

Upright vacuum cleaners are one of the most popular types of vacuum cleaners out there, simply because they are easy to use. You don’t need to bend over, and you can use your foot to change the angle of the vacuum cleaner to get to those hard to reach places.

They also don’t take up much space and are cheaper than a canister vacuum. The only drawback is that they are heavy and it will be hard to lug them over stairs mattresses or upholstery.

Canister vacuums, on the other hand, have a little more versatility than upright cylinders as they have an extendable wand attached to the canister. You don’t need to lug the vacuum cleaner around; you can direct the wand to whichever area you want to clean, and it will suck all the dirt and dust right into the canister.

They usually have separate powerheads too, depending on how much suction you need. They will, however, take up more space in your house because you’re storing a wand, a hose, and a canister instead of a single continuous upright vacuum cleaner.

The noise won’t be a big factor for you unless you have little children in the house or pets which are sensitive to loud noises. Some vacuum cleaners especially upright ones can be really loud and may wake your babies up and make them cry.

An ideal volume level that won’t disturb the peace is 60 – 65 decibels.

Buying a vacuum cleaner is a big investment and will cost you several hundred dollars. You would also need the vacuum to last for at least 5 years.

Thus, when buying a vacuum cleaner, it’s always best to do as much research as possible before buying.

The buyer’s guide that I have provided here is a good start. Also, it’s advisable to stick with a reputable brand, preferably one that gives you a warranty.
